Heya!!
Ruminants such as cows have four stomachs which are rumen, reticulum, omasum and abomasum.
The fodder eaten by the ruminants is sent directly to the first stomach called the rumen. It is the largest chamber. In the rumen food is partially digested. This partially digested food is called cud. The food is stored here and digestion of cellulose also takes place.
The cud is then brought to the mouth in small lumps and then chewed.
The process of chewing the cud is called rumination. During rumination, cud mixes with saliva and becomes pulpy or, semi-liquid paste. After chewing the pulpy food is passed to the rest of the stomach.
So we conclude that Ruminants sit and chew the partially digested food known as cud that came from the first stomach to the mouth.
Hope this helps you... : )
