Rusting is an example of a redox reaction. Iron and steel rust when they are in contact with oxygen and water. ... The zinc acts as a 'sacrificial metal', in addition to stopping oxygen and air reaching the iron surface.

Redox reaction is the reaction in which oxidation and reduction occurs simultaneously. Rust of iron is nothing but hydrate of iron oxide (Fe2O3.nH2O) and iron(III) oxide -hydroxide (FeO(OH)Fe(OH)3).

It is electrochemical process, half reactions of which are as follows.

O2 + 4  e− + 2  H2O → 4  OH− Here oxygen gains electrons thus, it is oxidizing agent
Fe → Fe2+ + 2  e− as you can see from this half cell reaction Fe by loses electron and thus it is reducing agent
Thus in rusting of iron reduction and oxidation occurs indeed, and hence it is Redox reaction.
