he chose a goild foil .
1) he observed that most of the alpha particles were passed straight it means they have space between them.
2) some of them were reflected back it means that the positive charges have very little space and are in nucleus.
3) one out of 20000 alpha particle was rebound.

Hey !!

           RUTHERFORD ATOMIC MODEL

This model was basd upon ∝ - particle scattering experiment. The ∝-particlesscattering experiments performed by Rutherford are concerned with the discovery of the nucleus.

The following conclusions were drawn from these experiments

  • A major portion of the atom is empty space because most of ∝-particles passed straight through the atom.
  • The atom has a very small rigid, positively charged body called nucleus and the ∝-particles are repelled from the neutral foil due to this positively charged nucleus.
  • The whole mass of the atom is concentrated in the nucleus, so it is very heavy and rigid.

MAIN POSTULATES OF THIS MODEL

  • An atom mainly consists of free space. Each atoms contains a heavy positively charged body at its centre called the nucleus.
  • The negatively charged electrons revolving around the nucleus are called planetary electrons.
  • The size of the nucleus (r = 10⁻¹⁵ m) is very small as compared to that of atom (r = 10⁻¹⁰ m).
  • All protons and neutrons are stablised in the nucleus by a strong interactions force.
  • Rutherford atmoic model failed because he could not explain the electronic structure of atom. In other words, it does not tell about the distribution of electrons around the nucleus.

Good luck !!
