Yes, in India the festivals are occassions of joy rather than a day dedicated to god. It is quite true that people spend a lot of money in festivals especially in big festivals such as Christmas , Diwali etc.

But spending money doesn't make god happy , what makes god happy is a happy everyday living, spending each moment being thankfull to god.
