PREFACE:

Swami Vivekananda was born on 18 January 1863 at the Shimla Rally in Calcutta under the name of Narendranath Dutt.

His father, Vishwanath Dutt, was a lawyer in the Calcutta High Court, and mother Bhuvaneshwari Devi was a housewife.

He was the chief follower of Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa and later became the founder of the Ramakrishna Mission.

He was the man who succeeded in introducing the Hindu philosophy of Vedanta and Yoga in Europe and America and revived Hinduism in modern India.

THE EARLY LIFE OF SWAMI VIVEKANANDA:

Swami Vivekananda was influence by his father’s rational mind and his mother’s religious nature.

He learned self-control from his mother and later became an expert in meditation and also developed a remarkable leadership quality in his youth.

He came in contact with Sri Ramakrishna after going to the Brahmo Samaj & stayed with his monk-brothers in Baranagar Math.

In his later life, he decided to visit India and began wandering from place to place and lived with people of all religions and gained an in-depth knowledge of Indian cultures and religions.

ADDRESS IN THE WORLD PARLIAMENT OF RELIGIONS:

Vivekananda left for Chicago on 31 May 1893 for the Parliament of World Religions, he represented India and gave a speech at a conference introducing Hinduism to the world which made him very popular.

When Swami Vivekananda began his speech with “Sisters and Brothers of America”, a crowd of 7000 spectators took a 2-minute pause.

He continued his speech and talked about India’s ancient culture, tolerance, universal brotherhood, etc.

This speech by Vivekananda caught the attention of the world audience and represented him as the most significant and influential figure in the conference.

He also gave many effective speeches and lectures at various places.
