Given:

Saira went to the stationery shop to buy some pens and pencils. She bought 2 times as many pens as pencils. She has spent a total of Rs 52. A single pen costs Rs 12 and a single pencil costs Rs 2.

To Find:

The total number of pens bought by Saria is?

Solution:

1. Assume the number of pens and pencils as x and y respectively.

2. As Saira bought 2 times as many pens as pencils, the relation between x and y can be written as,

=> x = 2y ( Consider as equation 1 ),

3. The sum of all the stationery purchased by Saini is Rs 52, Equationally it can be represented as,

=> 12x + 2y = 52, ( Consider as equation 2 ).

4. Solve equations 1 and 2 for the values of x and y,

=> Add equations 1 and 2,

=> x - 2y  + 12x - 2y = 52,

=> 13x = 52,

=> x = 4.

5. Substitute the value of x in equation 1,

=> 4 = 2y,

=> y = 2.

6. The total number of pens purchased by Saira is 4.

Therefore, Saira has purchased a total of 4 pens.
