Salim is half the age of his mother now. Ten years ago he was one third the age of his mother's age. What are their present ages?
Let the mother's age be x years.
So, Salim's age = x/2
Mother's age = x-10 years.
Salim's age = x/2 -10 years
Salim's age = 1/3 mother's age
Let the mother's age be x years.
So, Salim's age = x/2
Mother's age = x-10 years.
Salim's age = x/2 -10 years
Salim's age = 1/3 mother's age

• Let the present age of Salim's mother be 'x'
Age of Salim be 1/2 of 'x' which is x/2 .
• Now , ten years ago , their ages :-
Mother's age = x-10
Then , Salim's age would be =
x/2 -10 ( as age is 10 years ago )
= x-20/2
• ATQ ,
x-20/2 = 1/3 of x-10
=> x-20/2 = x-10/3
Therefore , the present ages of Salim and his mother are =
• Salim's age = 1/2 of x = 1/2 × 40 = 20
• Salim's mother's age = x = 40
