\bf{\red{QUESTION:-}} Salim is half the age of his mother now. Ten years ago he was one third the age of his mother's age. What are their present ages?

 \bf{step - wise \: explanation}

Let the mother's age be x years.

 \bf{ \blue{salim \: is \: half \: the \: age \: of \: mother}}

So, Salim's age = x/2

 \bf \underline{ \green{ten \: years \: ago}}

Mother's age = x-10 years.

Salim's age = x/2 -10 years

 =  \frac{x - 20}{2} \:  \:   \bf{years}

 \bf{ \pink{according \: to \: the \: question}}

Salim's age = 1/3 mother's age

  \bf =  > \frac{x - 20}{2}  =  \frac{1}{3}  \times x - 10

 \bf  =  > \frac{x - 20}{2}  =  \frac{x - 10}{3}

  =  > \bf{3(x - 20) = 2(x - 10)}

 =  >  \bf{3x - 60 = 2x - 20}

 =   >  \bf{3x - 2x =  - 20 + 60}

 =  >  \bf{x = 40}

 \bf{ \blue{mother \: age \:  = 40 \: years}}

 \bf{ \pink{salim \: age \:  =  \frac{40}{2} = 20 \: years }}

{\huge{\textbf {The answer :-}}}

• Let the present age of Salim's mother be 'x'
Age of Salim be 1/2 of 'x' which is x/2 .

• Now , ten years ago , their ages :-
Mother's age = x-10

Then , Salim's age would be =
x/2 -10 ( as age is 10 years ago )
= x-20/2

• ATQ ,

x-20/2 = 1/3 of x-10

=> x-20/2 = x-10/3

 = > \frac{x - 20}{2} = \frac{x - 10}{3}

 = > 3(x - 20) = 2(x - 10)

 = > 3x - 60 = 2x - 20

 = > 3x - 2x \: = 60 - 20

 = > x = 40

Therefore , the present ages of Salim and his mother are =

• Salim's age = 1/2 of x = 1/2 × 40 = 20

• Salim's mother's age = x = 40
