Explanation:

'Salim's Journey' written by Subhadra Sen Gupta is a story set in the 19th

century at Delhi when the city was ruled by Bahadur Shah Zafar, who was

the last of the Mughal Emperor and reigned from 1837 to 1857. He was a

great patriot of art and culture and encouraged musical tradition such as

quawwali, a popular poem of Urdu devotional song. Here you are going to

see one such quawwali singer and his family.

Salim, a young boy, was playing with his friend Anwar when his father

Maqsud Hussain told him to go to Balle Mia's house to convey the

message that they would rehearse from the next day. He also had to inform

the tabla player, the shehnai player and the chorus that they should come

to Maqsud's house to rehearse. Maqsud Hussain was a famous quawwali

singer.

As Salim and Anwar walked towards Balle Mia's house, Anwar asked Salim

whether there was going to be another concert. Salim wistfully replied that

it must be a concert. Further, he said that he had pleaded his father to

permit him to join the chorus but his father refused telling that he was too

young and he had not completed his training. Anwar praised him that he

sang pretty well. The next day, the music troupe of Maqsud Hussain

arrived at his house to rehearse. That night at dinner Salim asked his father

whether they were going to perform at Nizamuddin. His father said yes.

Salim's sister Farida and his mother asked her father to allow them to stay

and listen to the concert, for which he denied. Later when Farida asked him

whether he would permit them to stay back if she paid to hire a room.

Maqsud agreed and he offered to bear half the cost towards the room rent.

The next day Salim, Anwar, Farida their mother decide to sell Biryani at the

market place to earn money quickly. Later Maqsud grew angry seeing them

selling food in a public place.

Finally, the day they had been looking forward to, had arrived - the festival

in memory of Amir Khusro. They travelled by bullock cart and reached

Nizamuddin which wore a festive look. As dusk fell, all the people gathered

to listen to Maqsud's songs. Maqsud remembered how the people

applauded him when he sang a song praising a plate of Biryani. Thereafter,

he called Salim to come on the stage and join the chorus and to clap very

carefully.

Salim gratefully accepted his father's offer and his joy knew no bounds.

Finally, Salim got a chance to perform in the Nizamuddin's festival.

Explanation:

'Salim's Journey,' written by Subhadra Sen Gupta, is a narrative set in the 19th century in Delhi during the reign of Bahadur Shah Zafar, the final Mughal Emperor who reigned from 1837 to 1857. He was an art and culture patriot who promoted musical traditions such as quawwali, a popular poetry of Urdu devotional song. One such quawwali performer and his family can be seen here. Salim, a small child, was playing with his buddy Anwar when his father, Maqsud Hussain, urged him to go to Balle Mia's house to deliver the news that they would begin practising the next day. He had to also tell the tabla player.

Finally, the day they had been anticipating had arrived: the Amir Khusro memorial event. They arrived at Nizamuddin via bullock waggon, which was dressed festively. As evening struck, everyone gathered to hear Maqsud's singing. Maqsud recalled how the audience praised him as he sang a song about a plate of Biryani. Following that, he summoned Salim to the stage, where he joined the chorus and clapped carefully. Salim gladly accepted his father's offer, and his happiness had no boundaries. Finally, Salim was given the opportunity to play at the Nizamuddin Festival.
