Where does our salt come from?

Salt is harvested directly either from seawater or natural brine, or from rock salt deposits. In Europe, many rock salt deposits were formed over 200 to 250 million years ago as a result of the evaporation of earlier seas, including a basin that covered large parts of Europe but that has dried up since. There are three types of salt extraction: solar evaporation, rock salt mining and solution mining. The most familiar use of salt undoubtedly is as an element for the cooking and preparing of food. Probably less known is that the chemical industry is by far the largest consumer of salt. Salt is the raw material for the production of chlorine and caustic soda; they are produced by the electrolysis of salt in the form of brine. Chlorine is an extremely effective disinfectant and an essential component in the chemical manufacture of thousands of products used every day. Other applications within the chemical industry include:

• Pulp and paper industry: for pulping and neutralization, washing and bleaching and processing of waste paper

• Textiles: leather tanning, finishing of wool and cotton, dyeing and bleaching

• Petroleum additives

• Dyes

Hard water is water that contains invisible dissolved minerals, principally calcium and magnesium minerals. Most commonly, people notice the effect of hard water because of a build-up of scale in kettles and on showerheads, or other domestic appliances that use water. The problems associated with hard water can be resolved by installing a water softener. Water softeners operate on the ion exchange process. Essentially the water passes through millions of negatively charged tiny resin beads that attract the hardness minerals – calcium and magnesium. The resin is ‘washed’ to remove the minerals and used again. Salt is essential for the regeneration of the ion exchange resins. Water softening increases the efficiency and lifespan of energy intensive devices. In doing so, salt helps to reduce energy consumption and cuts waste from defective appliances.

Salt keeps us safe in winter

During winter we count on salt to keep our roads safe and free of snow or ice. Salt is the most widely used de-icing agent in Europe and throughout the world due to its huge advantages. It is not only widely naturally occurring and easy to store and to use, it also has the least environmental impact when used properly. When salt is applied to ice and snow it lowers the freezing temperature of water and therefore melts the ice and snow.
