Mr. Hammond, who is travelling on the American steamer "The Spartan" is suspicious about two passengers after having witnessed their conversation on the deck. They were talking about a secret square box, a mechanism and the fact that the world will soon hear of it. With other clues like their foreign names, their boarding at the last minute without having their luggage searched, their wish to execute their plan at 10 precisely... No doubt for Hammond, they are planning to destroy the ship with a bomb. He tries to explain the situation to a friend travelling on the same boat, but he is not taken seriously. Since he's afraid to talk to the captain, he resigns to his fate and decides to rest near the deck, hidden in a lifeboat. As 10 o'clock approach, the two men arrive on the deck with their box, they install it and when they are about to activate it, Hammond decides to intercept them. Unfortunately, one of the two men stops him and the other one pulls a trigger on the box... from which two pigeons fly away. The two Americans were just planning a test by sending two carrier pigeons from a far distance at sea and see which one would arrive home first.
