India at that time was facing many problems due to partition. There were 562 princely states in India who were given choice either to join India or Pakistan. Despite so many problems, Sardar Vallabhai Patel adopted the carrot and stick policy to ensure these princely states to accede to India.
He built confidence among Civil Serents to unify India. He invoked patriotism of the princes and warned them of anarchy on their refusal to join India. He introduced "Privy Purse" i.e the payment to the royal families if they join Union. His repeated appeals led most princely states to Join India with the exception of Junagarh, Hyderabad and Kashmir. In these three princely states Patel used the stick (force) and made them to merge with India.
He is rightly called the Iron Man of India and the Government of India made the world's tallest statue named "Statue of Unity" to pay tribute to him for his role in integrating India.
