Lord Bentinck was the Governer General in India in the late 1820s. At that time Indian reformer Raja Rammohan Ray organised a campaign against 'Sati'. Responding to it Lord Bentinck used his legal powers to pass the Bengal Sati Regulation Act of 1929, which banned the prqactice of burning a widow on his deceased husband's funeral pyre.
