Satvik collected some rainwater as his teacher told him that rainwater is equivalent to distilled water. He randomly tested the rainwater to confirm whether his teacher was right or wrong. He observed some deflection in the magnetic compass. Can you state the reason behind this deflection?

Paheli had heard that rainwater is as good as distilled water.

In case of fire, before the firemen use the water hoses, they shut off the main electrical supply for the area.

Explain why they do this.

When the free ends of a tester are dipped into a solution, the magnetic needle shows deflection.

The reason behind deflection was presence of salt and acids.

•Distilled water is pure water, without impurities.

•Rainwater is evaporated water of sea, hence it contains number of salts and acids.

•These occur in ionic form, causing occurrence of ions.

•The ions are responsible for conducting nature.

•This movement of electrons show slight deflection in magnetic deflection.

•Various ions present in rainwater are - sodium, chlorine, potassium, calcium, chloride, bicarbonate etc.
