Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh was a Rajput ruler of the kingdom of Amber which later became Jaipur.

He is known to be the first hindu ruler who performed the ancient ceremonies that are written in the Vedas, like ashwameda and the vajapewa yajna both of whose contents were majorly distributed as charity.

He also abolished the sati tradition, promoted Sanskrit learning and put a limit to extravagance expenditures.
