Given:

5 shirts and 10 pants are sold at Rs.1600. The shirt is sold at 15% profit and pant is sold at a 10% loss.

To find:

The cost price of each pant and shirt.

Solution:

Let the price of one shirt is m and one price of pant is n.

The price of 5 shirts is 5m and the price of 10 pants is 10n.

Formulate an equation using the above-mentioned sentences.

5m+10n=1600...(1)

The overall profit is Rs.90.

Using 15% profit in the selling of shirts and 10% loss in the selling of pants, formulate an equation.

5m\times\frac{(100+15)}{100} +10n\times\frac{100-10}{100} =1690\\5m\times\frac{(115)}{100} +10n\times\frac{90}{100} =1690\\\\5.75m+9n=1690...(2)

From equation (1),

5m=1600-10n\\m=\frac{1600-10n}{5} \\=320-2n

Substitute m=320-2n into the equation (2) and find the value of n.

5.75(320-2n)+9n=1690\\1840+11.5n-9n=1690\\2.5n=150\\n=\frac{150}{2.5} \\=60

Substitute n=60 into the equation m=320-2n and find m.

m=320-2\times60\\=320-120\\=200

Thus, the cost price of each pant is Rs. 60 and cost price of each shirt is Rs. 200.
