Drugs & Mental Health

Everyone has its own definition of mental health, one may think of control, happiness as a sign of healthy mind. Mental ill health is the opposite of this – it causes problems and creates barriers to being happy.

People use psychoactive drugs like cannabis, alcohol, ecstasy and heroine to change their mood, as these drugs arouse certain emotions. This change in emotions and behaviour is only because these drugs change mind. These drugs have both short-term and long-term effects. You may enjoy short-term effects, but long term effects can be very serious.

Short-term effects

Panic Attacks – This is the period of high anxiety when your heart rate increases, with trembling, sweats, shortness of breath, and a fear of losing control. You may also feel like your surroundings are strange and unreal, or that you are losing your personal identity and sense of reality.

Mood Disorders - You may feel sad, depressed, tired, restless sometime or sometimes impulsive behaviour. This is known as mood disorder.

Long-term effects

Psychoactive drugs may cause serious mental health problems. It might be possible that these drugs may trigger long mental illness.

Ecstasy and depression - Ecstasy drug is an amphetamine that causes hallucinations. It works by making serotonin more available and gives you a sense of euphoria when you take it. Serotonin is a chemical naturally found in your brain which regulates your mood. It is sometimes called the ‘happy hormone’. Ecstasy causes your brain to release a much higher amount of serotonin than usual. Over time your natural stores of serotonin may drop so much that you may never have the same levels as you had before you started using drugs. If lots of serotonin means euphoria than lack of serotonin means depression. You may experience short-term depression in the days after you use ecstasy.

Cannabis and schizophrenia - Schizophrenia is a severe mental illness which may cause you to hear voices in your head and believe that other people are trying to control or harm you. Cannabis can trigger Schizophrenia; risks are higher if you smoke regularly.

Drugs and Physical Health

Drugs can have immediate and long-lasting effects on your physical health and well-being.

Physical injuries: When you are influenced by drug intake, you make act as normally. You may lose you sense which increases your chances of getting hurt or having an accident. Drug-related injuries can be from things like falling and car accidents.

Violence: Some drugs can increase the likelihood of violent behaviour. Violence is never an acceptable way to react in a situation, and if you become violent when you use drugs, it’s a good idea to re-evaluate your drug use. Drug-induced violence can lead to serious injury to you and to others.

Internal damage: Regular use of some drugs can damage your internal organs like liver, brains, lungs, throat and stomach. Some people use glue for sniffing as drug which cause hearing loss and kidney damage.

Pregnancy and STDs: While you’re under the influence of drugs, you might be less likely to remember to have safe sex. Unprotected sex can lead to pregnancy or the spread of STDs like HIV/AIDS.

Risk of other infectious diseases: Sharing needles from injecting certain types of drugs can put you at major risk for getting diseases like Hepatitis C, Hepatitis B, as well as HIV. These diseases are spread through the transmission of body fluids like blood. You can also contract other common infections, like colds & cough, from sharing pipes or bongs.

Addiction: When you take drugs, there’s a chance that you could become dependent on them. This means that you might feel like you can’t operate without drugs in your system or that you spend a lot of your time and energy finding & using the drug. You might also have withdrawal symptoms when you stop using the drug. If you use drugs often, your tolerance to the drug might increase, causing you to need to take a greater amount to get the same effects.

Drug intake can also affect your personal relations and future. So, it is good to stay away from such things and live a happy life.
