Task panes are windows that appear on either side of the word window.

It's a dockable dialog window that gives users a much easier way to use commands, gather information and modify their documents.

Task panes help users in a way that they provide quick access to relevant commands within the pane to complete a specific task.

It's visible only when requested.

When you open word, they don't appear automatically. An example is the styles task pane for formatting the current document, which displays all the styles available.

Other panes available in word 2010 includes the Reviewing Pane and the Research Pane.
