The benzoylation of compounds containing active hydrogen such as alcohols, phenols or amines with benzoyl chloride in presence of a base is called Schotten-Baumann reaction. The reaction of acid chloride with amine or carboxylic acid is carried out in presence of pyridine, so that the evoled HCl is consumed by it.
