The separation usually is initiated from the lower edge or the end of the placenta. This helps the placenta to move and slip down in the sidewise direction.
The maternal surface then appears primarily at the region of the vulva. The occurrence of blood clotting is then seen on the site of the placenta which mainly occurs in the torn blood vessels and the sinuses.
