Methane is the simplest organic molecule and is the main component of natural gas. Methane is made up of a carbon atom bonded to four hydrogen atoms. The chemical formula for methane is CH4. Notice that in the formula CH4 there is a number written lower and smaller after the symbol for hydrogen.
