In scientific forestry, the British wanted the farmers to grow only one type of trees in straight rows and they also asked the farmers to stop the practice of shifting cultivation. Scientific forestry was proposed by a German expert Dietrich Brandis.

Dietrich Brandis introduced scientific forestry in India. The British adopted this policy to convert Natural forest of India into Plantations. For this they cut and replaced the Natural types of forests comprising varied types of trees with only one type of trees. This is termed as scientific forestry.
