Chief Seattle’s Speech 1854

Chief Seattle (1786 – 1866) was the chief of the Suquamish and Duwamish native American tribes. Seattle, the American city is named after him. He is particularly famous for his ‘speech’ delivered in 1854. The speech was a response to the American Government’s land treaty to buy the native lands.

Chief Seattle’s speech is considered as a powerful appeal for respect of native American rights and environmental values. Seattle criticized the imperialistic mindset of the whites and their way of thoughtless developments affecting the natural environment. He cautioned against the fast progress of western civilization and pitched for the necessity to preserve nature.

This is the reason for considering the speech of Chief Seattle as a powerful plea for respect of native American rights and environmental values.
