a) Read the passage carefully and answer the questions below it (7.5 marks)
If you go through the country in Australia you will see thousands of rabbits. They are everywhere, in the fields and on the roads. They run across the roads in front of cars, eat the grass in the fields and make their burrows everywhere. Farmers have to kill rabbits because they destroy the fields. They either shoot them or poison them. Eight rabbits eat as much grass as a sheep. They eat the roots of plants. This is very bad because the roots hold the earth together. They make burrows in the ground and break the earth up, and the wind and rain carry the soil away. Thus we have soil erosion. Rabbits’ skin is used for making clothes and its meat is used as food. Not all Australians like rabbit meat, but it is the cheapest kind of meat. People call it “underground mutton.” Before the Europeans came, Australia had no rabbits. They were introduced in 1788 by an Englishman who brought with him five white rabbits as pets for his children. Some years later, English ships brought grey rabbits and put them on an island in Bass Strait. In 1859, a farmer in Victoria got twenty-four rabbits from England. These were not pets or playthings. He wanted to breed them for his children because they liked shooting. He put them in the fields and they multiplied very quickly. He set thirteen of them free, and in six year’s time, their numbers increased so much he had to kill twenty thousand and yet there were about ten thousand left. There were others who brought rabbits from England and were sorry for it.
