Photosynthetic bacteria are prokaryotes that are capable of carrying out photosynthesis. They are widely distributed occupying several habitats like soil, lakes, paddy fields, oceans, rivers, and activated sludge (Koblížek et al. 2006; Okubo et al. 2006).

Cyanobacteria contain chlorophyll while other forms of bacteria contain bacteriochlorophyll. Although bacteriochlorophyll resembles chlorophyll, it absorbs light of a longer wavelength than chlorophyll. Bacteriochlorophyll a is the most common form of bacteriochlorophyll but other forms include b, c, d, e, f and g.

Carbohydrate synthesis occurs in the stroma, the soluble phase between the thylakoid membrane and the inner membrane. In photosynthetic bacteria extensive invaginations of the plasma membrane form a set of internal membranes, also termed thylakoid membranes, or simply thylakoids, where photosynthesis occurs.
