Answer:
A life as unfair as they come. It’s what I was given.
I didn’t deserve any of it either.
I was born a child of immigrant parents, who were married at a young age. My dad was a hardworking man, my mother a caring and loving woman.
I was raised in a small trailer as a baby. For my first birthday I was gifted a small cake from the local Safeway.
My mom and I celebrated alone as my dad was off bringing home our daily bread.
Stress got to my old man, and pretty soon it was evident that things had to be solved with kicks and punches. If I showed a lack of discipline, you best bet that belt was going to come off and you’d be in the receiving end of it.
I grew up in submission, with purple marks across my legs for whatever reason.
“Pokemon cards are the devil’s work!”
“The teacher called and said you were immature!” (Me in kinder)
I grew up in someone else’s garage, sleeping in the sofa as my parents slept in a makeshift room.
There were literal nights when I woke up to my mother trying to wake me up in desperation for me to do something as my dad would come over and “Teach us a lesson”
I still remember her tears streaming down and her begging for help right next to me.
At the same time, when someone is oppressed that oppressed person will tend to find ways to still get their needs met.
My mother taught me how to lie and deceive.
“Isn’t that wrong? Why can’t I just tell my dad?”
“If you tell him, he’ll beat you up and then I’ll give you a second round for tattle telling.”
I lied my way through my childhood. We submitted to my dad’s law and word, but at the same time got moments of liberty as we’d work together to do what we’d like to do.
