I Dr Varghese Kution, the AMUL (Anand Mit Union Limited) man, was the visionary Administrator who spearheaded
the Dairy Cooperative Movement and made Operation Hood a runway success By building India's dury industry,
he achieved recognition for himself and brought glory to the country
The beginmy of AMUL can be traced w 1949. when Dr Kurun took a job at Anand in Gujarat to organise milk
production and all that a invelved He took over an existing dairy coaperative run by Shri T Patel, and mobilised
mulk producers cooperatives He totally changed the concept of dairying He introduced innovatives like having a
nonwork of veterinary services and cattle breeding centres. Sixteen years later, he became the head of the National
Dairy Development Board, to develop and relocate the 'Anand Pattern all over the country
Then came Operation Flood in 1970. involvmg nearly 170 million people. It is the world's biggest dairy development
programme
4. Under its aegis, sis million dairy owners in 175,000 village cooperatives, produce process and market milk to 500
cities and towns throughout India. The programme has helped stabilise mulk prices, reduce India's dependence on
milk imports ensure the supply of lygenic milk and provide a source of regular income to small farmers and others.
Operation Flood has now expanded to include fruits, vegetables and oilseeds
