Equality is the heart of Indian Constitution. Though inequalities, disparities and differences are existing and widening because of lopsided policies of the successive governments, the equality continues to be the objective and aim of the constitutional governance. Secularism is one facet of equality among the people of all religions, which cannot be tinkered with. Secularism is the basic character of our well-drafted Constitution, besides democracy.

According to the Constitution , the key elements of secularism in India are as follows :-

1. All religions are equal before law .

2. The Indian State does not have an official religion . This can be interpreted that India is a non religious State , and that all religions are equal. This means that government buildings like courts , police stations,  government offices and government schools cannot display or promote any one religion.

Secondly , in order to respect the sentiments of all religions and to uphold the interest of certain sections of the society , the Indian government does make certain exceptions and intervene in some religious practices .

hope it helps .
