It allowed the people to differentiate between fair and unfair treatment and to stand up for their rights.

Explanation:

  • The British ruled in India for about 200 years and India got freedom from British colonial rule on August 15, 1947.
  • The sedition act of 1870 imposed limitations on the people who will protest or criticize the British authority.
  • The British Raj arrested the people without any notification and kept them as prisons without any trial.
  • This unfair treatment led the people to stand up for their rights.

Sedition act 1870 opened the gates of freedom for India

Explanation:

  • The Sedition Act allowed the government to arrest or detain anyone who had been seen to protest or criticize the British authority, in the court without being tried fairly. This was an example of British arbitrary use of power as it allowed them to arrest the unproven person who was probably viewed as a rebellion. Within the Law, people were imprisoned and held in custody awaiting trial without being told why they were being detained.
  • This act was seen as turning point  in the struggle of India's Independence. The Indians nationalist had began criticising and protesting the British's arbitrary use of their authority. Nationalist also began to fight for "better equality" & had wanted to change the "idea of law" which they were compelled to obey, to law as including justice
  • By the end of the 19th century, Indian began to "asserting themselves" in the colonial courts. The "Indian Legal Profession" started  emergening "as a force to reckon" & Indian had demanded respect in courts. The Indian began using laws to "defend their rights". Moreover Indian Judges started to play a "greater role"
