Evil of dowry system:
In earlier times in ancient India, dowry was given as gifts to the daughter by her parents at the time of her marriage. This presenting of gift was not mandatory, rather it depended on the wishes of the parents and their daughters.
But, as the time passed, slowly the practice of dowry became rigid and mandatory and now people were forced to present gifts not to the daughter but to her in- laws.
And, then began the evil practice of dowry where people began to torture young brides and her parents to demand more and more dowry. It also gave birth to other social issues, where girls started to be seen as burden to their families, and due to this many young girls were married of to men much older to them if they ask less dowry.
It also gave rise to female foeticide and female infanticide. Various actions were taken by the government and various NGOs to raise awareness about the evils of dowry and some progress has also been made.
But, it is impossible to dream of a modern India where such evil practices exist, and hopefully with all the government and non governmental organizations these issue can finally be resolved.
