Selenium is a trace element that is complexed with proteins, called selenoproteins, which play a role in immune function, thyroid function, and act as antioxidants (NIH, 2009d). Dietary selenium is primarily in the selenomethionine form, and 90% is absorbed in the duodenum and proximal jejunum.

Ingested selenium, after being absorbed from the duodenum of the small intestine, is transported in the blood to the liver. It is subsequently reduced to selenite; then it is resynthesized into selenoproteins that make their way into the red blood cells.
