a) The self-respect movement was started by Periyar or E V Ramaswami Naicker in Tamil Nadu.

• The movement was started against the Brahmins who were biased and used to discriminate on the basis of caste.
• The lower caste people were not allowed to read a religious text and to enter into temples.
• They were also discriminated against for drawing water from the same well and getting an education in the same school. The aim was to get equal human rights for each section of society.
