The given substances can be separated by-

1. Ammonium chloride and sand can be separated by sublimation. Ammonium chloride sublimes on heating.

2. A separating funnel can be used to separate water and petrol. Water and petrol are insoluble liquids and they form two layers when tried to mix. The oil being heavier resides at the bottom whereas water forms the upper layer.

3. Distillation can be used to separate acetone from water. On heating, acetone vaporizes leaving the water behind.

4. The process of evaporation can be used to separate salt and water. The boiling point of salt is higher than the water so when the solution of salt and water is heated, water vaporizes and salt is left behind.
