The heart is divided longitudinally into two halves by the septum. ... The upper chambers on each side of the septum are auricles, the lower chambers are called ventricles. Auricles have thin walls and act as receiving rooms for the blood while the ventricles below act as pumps, moving the blood away from the heart.
