On the table lay a plate with only two apples
on it. Ramit and Sumit, both looked at them
and waited for the other to pick one up. After

brother Sumit.
"You are very rude, Ramit!” said Sumit in an
angry voice.
"Why", asked Ramit.
"Well, you have given me the small one. Now, if I had two apples I would have given you
the bigger one and kept the small one for myself."
"Why are you cross then?" asked Ramit, "You have got the small one, haven't you?"
Sumit stared at his brother for a while and then both burst out in laughter.
1. (a) If there were only two boys present and there were two apples on the table, why did
the boys wait for the other to pick one up?
(b) Why did Sumit call his brother rude? What is the opposite of rude?
(c) Ramit thought that Sumit had no reason to look cross. Do you agree with him? Give
