Newton's first law, also referred to the law of inertia states that ‘an object in motion stays in motion unless acted upon by an unbalanced, external force’.

Example

Let's look at an airplane. When in motion, the airplane will not slow down, unless something greater acts upon it.
As explained by the image, if thrust and drag are equal, the airplane will stay at the constant speed of the airplane because the two external forces balance eachother.

However, once the aircrafts thrust is increased, and drag is the same (if thrust is greater than drag) the aircraft will move at the speed applied to the engine, in addition to the force from thrust.
