Mirza Abu Talib, often known as Shaista Khan, was a Mughal army subhedar and commander. Emperor Aurangzeb's maternal uncle. In the year 1660, he was dispatched to fight the Maratha ruler Shivaji.

Aurangzeb sent Shaista Khan as viceroy of the Deccan with a large army to defeat Shivaji. Shaista Khan landed in Aurangabad in January 1660 and moved fast, capturing Pune, Shivaji's capital. After fierce combat with the Maratha, he also took the forts of Chakan and Kalyan, as well as the north Konkan.

Shivaji and his almost 400 soldiers arrived Pune dressed as bridegroom's procession participants. Others arrived in small groups dressed as workers and Maratha generals under Shaista Khan's command. They invaded the Nawab's property after midnight and then broke inside the palace in an effort to murder Shaista Khan.

Shaista Khan appeared to be caught off guard and unprepared. The Marathas stormed the royal courtyard and murdered the palace guards. In a conflict with Shivaji, Shaista Khan lost three fingers, and his son was murdered in a battle with the Marathas in the palace courtyard.
