Indirect speech is the speech used to express the speaker's words in front of other people but not in exact words spoken by the speaker.

   General rules considered while changing a direct speech to indirect speech:

  • Present perfect tense replaced with past perfect tense, present continuous to past continuous, present perfect to past perfect and simple present to simple past.
  • Simple past tense changes to past perfect and past continuous to past perfect.
  • No conjunction is used if the sentence in direct speech begins with a question.
  • Can changes to could, may to might and must change to had to / would have to.
  • The first person changes as per the subject of direct speech.
