Question :

Change the sentence into indirect speech.

  • She said " I was waiting for you " .

Answer :

She said that she had been waiting for me.

The rules to change a direct speech into an indirect speech are as follows :

  • The comma and the double quotations are to be omitted.
  • The tense of the sentence inside the quotation does not change if the reported verb is in present tense.
  • The tense of the sentence inside the quotation changes accordingly if the reported verb is in past tense.
  • Here , the reported verb is in simple past tense, therefore the tense of the sentence inside quotation changes from past continuous tense to past perfect continuous tense.
  • ' I ' becomes 'she'.
  • 'Was waiting' becomes 'had been waiting'.
  • 'You' becomes 'me'.
