Let Shekar have N sweets. He gives (1/4) of N to Renu. So he has sweets left with him = N - (1/4)N = (3/4)N . Out of (3/4)N sweets, he gives 5 sweets to Raji. So now Shekar has sweets left with him = (3/4)N  - 5. These sweets left with Shekar are given to be 7, therefore                       (3/4)N  - 5 = 7 ==> (3/4)N = 7+5 = 12 ==> N = (4/3)x12 = 16
