There are no disadvantage in and off themselves. However, there can be indirect disadvantages.
For example, the vast majority of people with masters and PHDs I have met, and even if they don’t have any experience in the workforce, expect to not do the “dirty tasks”.
In other words, don’t expect a PHD candidate from Oxford to go knocking on doors for you in business.
It isn’t the PHD that has done this to people. Merely, it has made some of these people have a certain amount of expectation about what sorts of tasks they should be doing.
In comparison, somebody that was struggling before, will do anything for the first few years to make more money, before working their way up.
Added to that, a certain percentage of PHD students, just want to go into academia.
Again, nothing wrong with that. However, in the current environment in the UK and many other countries, it isn’t easy to get full-time positions
Even if you do, you won’t get paid much for the first 10 years or so:So you could end up with loads of debt, and with an average paid job until at least your 30s or 40s.
So people going down that path, should know what they are getting themselves into.
Let’s not forget as well, that higher education isn't the automatic ticket to success it once was.
These days, what you do in the hours outside your degree course, are much more important than what you do whilst studying.
