The Kinetic Theory of Matter states that matter is composed of a large number of small particles—individual atoms or molecules—that are in constant motion. This theory is also called the Kinetic-Molecular Theory of Matter and the Kinetic Theory of Gases.

  • The kinetic molecular theory explains the existence of solid, liquid and gaseous state by the following ways:

  • The kinetic energy of molecules of a substance is dependent on the temperature of the substance.

  • For a particular substance say water. At temperatures above 100 0C the kinetic energy of the molecules of the water are so high that the inter-molecular forces between molecules no longer able to hold the molecules together. The molecules move far apart and we have the vapor or gaseous state.
