Not all vultures do. The New World vultures (such as the turkey vulture, California condor the Andean condor) do not have beaks as strong as the Old World vultures (such as the Griffon vulture). The Old World vultures are close relatives of hawks, so they inherited their strong beaks and talons from their hawk ancestors. The New World vultures are not closely related to hawks. They still eat carrion but their beaks and talons are much weaker because they evolved from a different avian ancestor. The hook shape allows the vultures to tear meat off a carcass.
