“Travel in the younger sort, is a part of education. In the elder a part of experience,” Said Francis Bacon, This is for it satisfies one’s insatiable curiosity to know and explore the surroundings. Ever since man set foot on earth, he has been wandering from place to place, in search of food, shelter and knowledge.
Travel has always been of great educational value, since time immemorial. Man’s unquenchable curiosity made him undertake many bold and adventurous voyages over land and sea, discovering new continents and races. People like Columbus and Vasco de–Gaeta set sail to finally discover America and India, hundreds of years ago. The travel bug led Heiun Tsang to come to India and write about the glorious period of Chandragupta Maurya. Much later Marco Polo also came to India and recorded his experience 01 the great Moghul empire. Had it not been for their adventurous streak, the world would have been painfully ignorant of India’s glorious past. The adventures of these great explorers gave new-insight to life, liberating society from many prejudices and beliefs. Even today our forays in space are laying to rest many age-old beliefs and superstitions that we have been blindly following.
Last year I had gone with my class on an educational tour to Goa. It is a beautiful place with golden sun soaked beaches and a salubrious climate. The weather was a great respite from-the extreme cold of the northern plains. Being the peak season, the beaches were crowded with people who had come to participate in the Christmas carnival, which is celebrated with great fanfare in Goa. We were lucky to get an accommodation at the Calangute beach tourist resort, which was facing the sea beach.
I took this opportunity to study the rich cultural heritage of Goa, which has a majority population of Christians. The local inhabitants speak English, Portuguese, and of course the local Goanese language. The all-pervading influence of the Portugal period is evident in the Portuguese architecture, and life style of the people. There are many tall and imposing churches in and around Panaji, the capital of the tiny state. On a mountain hillock facing the Arabian Sea stands Fort Agauda, built over two hundred years ago by the Portuguese. This offers a glimpse of the artistic taste of the people of that bygone era.
The carefree lifestyle, and melodious music in the bars and restaurants that abound on the beaches is contagious. It had me tapping and dancing, in gay abandon at the camp fire on the beach. Besides the fun and frolic, what I found commendable was the spirit of enterprise of the people. There were college boys plying motorcycles as taxis, the most common and economic means of transport for tourist. I found women running roadside cafes, which doubled up as bars, offering the local feni and beer to the tourists.The restaurants had exquisite cuisines comprising of variety of seafood, which had a unique taste and flavour. The local wine called Feni is a specialty, which needs special mention. Made from rice, a staple diet of the Goanese, its intoxicating influence is exhilarating.
Besides educating me on the culture and lifestyle ofthe people, the excursion provided me a welcome change from the drudgery of daily routine. of going to school, studying and finally going to bed. It not only made me aware of the people of the far off state, but also refreshed and invigorated me. The short travel was a part of education for me, for it gave me a national perspective, and an opportunity to experience the varied, yet rich cultural ethos of the country.
