BLOOD
Blood is a body fluid in humans and other animals that delivers necessary substances such as nutrients and oxygen to the cells and transports metabolic waste products away from those same cells. In vertebrates, it is composed of blood cells suspended in blood plasma.
There are three types of living cells in blood:
- red blood cells (or erythrocytes),
- white blood cells (or leukocytes) and
- platelets (or thrombocytes).
Blood plays an important role in regulating the body's systems and maintaining homeostasis. It performs many functions within the body, including: Supplying oxygen to tissues (bound to hemoglobin, which is carried in red cells) ... Hydraulic functions, including the regulation of the colloidal osmotic pressure of blood.
