Bolivia,s water war:-
1) Bolivia is a poor country in the continent of South America. The world bank pressurized the Bolivian government to give up its control over the municipal water supply. The rights of municipal water supply for the city of Cochabamba were sold to a multi-national company and the cost of water was also increased. The people protested against this decision because they had to spend their one fourth part of their total income on water.
2) In January 2000, a successful four day general strike was organised in the city by a new alliance of labour, human rights and community leader. But the strike was called off because of the proposal from the government to negotiate in this matter. Since the government had not taken any action for few days, so the people agitated again in February 2000 and the police took brutal action against public.
3) Another strike was organised in April 2000 and the government imposed martial law. The officers of the multi-national company were forced to leave the country and the government was made to concede to all the demands of the protesters. Water supply was restored to the municipality at the old rates and the contract with the multi-national company was cancelled.
