Answer :

Bryophytes -

  • It includes mosses and liverworts.
  • They are commonly called amphibians of the plant kingdom.
  • Water is important for sexual reproduction.
  • The body is differentiated.
  • They have root like structures called rhizoids which anchor them to the ground.
  • The plant body can be flat or with leaf like structures.
  • The main body is haploid.
  • It produces gametes, hence called gametophyte.
  • The sex organs are multicellular.
  • The male sex organ is called antherozoids.
  • The female sex organ is called archegonium.
  • Antherozoids produces biflagellated gametes called antherozoids.
  • Archegonium produces a single egg.
  • The antherozoids are released in the water.
  • They fuse with the egg.
  • After fertilization, a multicellular body called sporophyte is formed.
  • They are free living but attached to photosynthetic gametophyte for nourishment.
  • Some cells then, undergo reduction division/meiosis to produce haploid spores.
  • The spores germinate to form gametophyte.
