A major function is the modifying, sorting and packaging of proteins for secretion. It is also involved in the transport of lipids around the cell, and the creation of lysosomes. The sacs or folds of the Golgi apparatus are called cisternae.

Golgi complex structure:-

An Italian physician camillo Golgi (1898) first recognised this structure in never cells of barn owl and hence named after the discoverer.

  • It is found in all the eukaryotic cells except red blood cells Of angiosperm

  • It is also absent in prokaryotes, certain fungi and sperm cells of bryophytes and pteridophytes.

  • They are very well formed and larger in nerve cells and gland cells, however poorly developed in muscle cells.

  • The golgi complex in morphologically very similar in both plant and animal cells.

  • In plant cells and in invertebrate tissues, dictyosomes are dispersed throughout the cytoplasm.
