Lahore session was presided by Nehru . Despite fervent opposition from Gandhi, Nehru and his other young followers passed a resolution for complete independence on jan 26 1929, while gandhi was favouring swaraj analogous to a dominion under british as gandhi thought that we are unprepared for self rule and and to him independence is not transfer of power from white hands but a moral and a spiritual transformation. Gandhi went on to criticise this move as “hastily conceived and thoughtless passed” The importance of this session was that congress programmes and activities following this session was aimed at routing british from india. Nehru unfurled the Flag of India’s independence on the bank of River Ravi in Lahore and 26th jan was observed as purna swaraj day. This also explains why jan 26th (particulary that day) is celebrated as republic day
