Mitochondria are known as the power houses of the cell. They produce Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP). They are required for cellular respiration. They are present in both animal cell and plant cell. They are surrounded by two membranes. The inner membrane is folded into finger-like projections called cristae.

Mitochondria are an important cell organelle that can function as an entire cell itself.

The mitochondria are termed as the powerhouse of the cell, as they produce ATP within. It is the site where the Kreb cycle takes place. The mitochondria contain mitochondrial DNA and thereby can be considered as an entire cell.

During fertilization and zygote formation only maternal mitochondrial gene is taken to the next generation. Phylogenetic trees are constructed based on the mitochondrial DNA
