Raziya was the only woman ruler during the Sultanate Period. Iltutmish had nominated his daughter to succeed him as Sultan. But the nobles put his son Rukn-ud-din Firoz on the throne. The new Sultan proved to be weak and inefficient. He was soon deposed and Raziya ascended the throne. Raziya was an able ruler. She was just, generous, and benevolent person. She dressed like a man, ride horse, personally led the army in the battle field and held darbars. She possessed all the qualities of a great rulers, but the nobles could not accept a woman as their ruler. So, they conspired against her ans ultimately she put to death in 1240 CE.

Additional Information:-

Raziya is said to have shown undue favour to an Abyssinian slave, Jalal-ud-din Yaqut, which offended the Turkish rulers. The first to revolt was Altuniya, the Governer of Sarhind. Raziya marched with a large army to suppress the revolt but the rebel nobles killed Yaqut and imprisoned the queen. Raziya agreed to marry Altuniya, in order to free herself, but the rebellious followers of Altuniya deserted them. Both Raziya and Altuniya were put to death in 1240 CE.
